Using *.crx extensions not in the webstore in latest chrome54 (Windows)

Hey it is not a universal solution, but there is a way for a specific extension by using the whitelist.

The solution can both prevent the pop-up warning and give you the permission to use some extensions not in the webstore. If you can use the develop mode extensions but suffer from the pop-up warning, it also can help you.

Seems that not only just warning you but chrome54 will also forcibly disable the .crx extensions not in the webstore now, in Windows.

D@mn give me liberty or give me death! Maybe only I suffered from it but it is still a sad story.

Firstly copy the ID of the forcibly-disabled extension. For example:

Download " ZIP file of ADM/ADMX/JSON templates and documentation " from chromium website http://www.chromium.org/administrators/policy-templates . Extract and find windows\adm\<your-language>\chrome.adm . For example:

[Location]

Then press Win+R, running gpedit.msc.

Follow the steps shown in the following images (OMG it is boring to type)

Wait quite a few minutes. It takes a long time to load the ADM.

When finished, close the tab and open the setting marked in the following image:

Double click the setting:

Enable it. Click "show" and double-click the dialog, pasting the ID.

It works for me and I hope it can also help you.





Anyway, if you just want to use the extension and don't care about the warning, you can extract the *.crx and load the unpacked extension. It works, only with a pop-up warning.
